Shepherd's Watch: Review & Giveaway CLOSED!

CLOSED!

Recently, we discovered an amazing company called Shepherd's Watch. Amazing not only because of the sheer beauty of their products... but because of the function and history behind them.

You see, Shepherd's Watch makes wearable Sundials! Yes, you heard right. Sundials that you wear as a necklace or a ring!
Amazing -- I told you so!

Shepherd's Watch was founded in Montreal Canada in 1993 by respected artisan Harris Morrison. He uses a unique "bead of light" to make telling time a fun, fascinating and battery-free experience.

You can choose from a unique collection of “wearable sundial" gift pieces, from jewelry pendants to promise jewelry and garden sundials.
Each piece is actually a miniature portable sundial, which tells the time using only sunlight and the unique “bead-of-light” technology.

For those interested in sundial lore, history and science, the Shepherd's Watch website is filled with interesting Historical references and informative educational materials.

For a short video explaining the Bead of Light technology, just click here to view the Shepherd's Watch Video.

Shepherd's Watch makes several styles of wearable Sundial, these are our favourites:

The Aquitaine Series

How it works...
On sunny days, watch this replica go to work by suspending the dial by its black satin cord. Through a tiny hole, a thin ray of sunshine shines through to illuminate a number on the inside of the dial showing the time of day.

The Aquitaine is available in several design motifs in Pewter, Sterling Silver, mixed Silver and Gold, and Gold in 10, 14, or 18 karat, and by special order, 22 karat. All Shepherds Watch dials come with instructions.

Historical Note:
How did the Aquitaine sundial get its name? Almost 900 years ago, in 1152, Eleanor of Aquitaine gave a sundial like this one to King Henry II of England so that Henry would know when to return from the hunt for their love trysts. Henry had a copy of the dial made for Eleanor that was inlaid with diamonds and engraved with the words Carpe Diem or "Seize the Day."

Nocturnal Series

Historical Note:
Perhaps the most accurate of all our dials, "star" dials were first used in the 15th century by navigators who told time by the position of the stars. They work so well because they are based on the North Star, which is almost directly on the axis of the earth's tilt and always appears in the same position in the sky. All the other stars seem to revolve around it.

Saturn Series:

How it works:
1. Place dial on a level surface
2."S" tilted up in south direction.
3. Read the time in center of marbles shadow.
4. For increased accuracy, place two pennies under the marble

You will be amazed and intrigued by these gorgeous Sundials -- not just for their beauty, function, and style but by the immediate, haunting step back into time. These wearable pieces of timepiece art connect you to days long past -- they draw you in and cast their spell. You won't want to take them off!

You can connect with Shepherd's Watch on their brand-new Facebook page at: Shepherd's Watch Sundials.
Please stop by and tell them that Terri & Liz from Gathering My Roses sent you!

We also love Shepherd's Watch for their Humanitarian endeavours. They give back to the World Community.

Shepherd's Watch gives 10% of their profits to an international charity called Susila Dharma International. (It's the umbrella organization for about 47 projects in about 23 different countries.) These programs serve children, the elderly, the sick and the dispossessed in many innovative ways. Most of the programs started in individuals who had a vision and the strength to make it happen.
Susila Dharma International just launched its own Facebook Page.

I have a set of my grandmother's opal earrings that were one of my favorites as a child. I used to play dress up as a child and she would let me try on her jewelry (even the real stuff) and I would prance around the house and pretending I was a princess. She recently gave them to me because she said jewelry was meant to be worn and she wasn't wearing them anymore. lenz.nicole(at)gmail(dot)com

When I was just a baby my grandma bought me this dainty 18k gold bracelet she personalized for me when she traveled to Peru. It was enscribed 'with love always, Grandma' in Spanish. It was my first piece of jewelry I ever had and it was made to grow with me and to this day I still wear it on occasion.

My mother recently cleaned out her jewelry since she doesn't have the finger dexterity to fasten clasps anymore. She gave the jewelry to her kids and grandkids. One of the pieces she gave me is a fish necklace I bought her for Christmas when I was eight. I love it because it is the first gift I gave her that I remember picking out and paying for myself.

I have a tiny little pendant with a pice of butterfly wing in it. It was my mother's, who got it from her brother when he was stationed overseas in the military. One side, it looks like a tree, the other side, an ocean. Whenever I see it, I'm a little girl again, looking at it longingly, as it rested in my mother's jewlery box.

I remember the first wristwatch I was given as a child. This was when watches had that glow-in-the-dark feature that was later found to be a potential health risk because of the radium involved. But we didn't know that at the time, and I thought it was SO cool. I would even go into my closet and close the door during the day so I could watch it glow. Yes, I was a silly kid. But now I'm a silly adult.

My grandmother was one of the most amazing women I have ever known. When she was in her 30's my father and uncle were stationed in Okinawa Japan. Well my grandfather had passed away and she thought it would be an adventure to go visit them in Japan. She loved it so much there she stayed for a year and half! At that time it was not common for women to travel to other countries, but she was brave and her will was strong. Growing up she would always tell me stories of her time in Japan, and show me all the amazing trinkits she bought while there. One story was of this women she be-friended who gave her these amazing jade earings. They stayed friends untill the womens death and my grandmother wore those earings every year on the annaversery of her death. My grandmother gave me the earings before she passed three years ago and now I wear them on the annaversery of my grandmothers death.

My 2 brothers' (well, half-brothers, since they had a different father, but I never thought of them that way - they were just my brothers) father gave each of them a pocketwatch not too long before he died when they were teenagers. They each cherished those watches as their last gift from their dad and kept them throughout their adult years. When my youngest brother was killed in a random act of violence four years ago, I had his ex-wife come over to go through the items that were at my house, so she could have some of them to give to their children. When she came to the watch, I told her the story of it, and she gave it to me to keep in remembrance. I still have the watch on my 'memory shelf' along with my baby brother's picture.

I bought my mother a nice watch one year and she LOVED it. She kept saying it was too nice to wear (which it wasn't) but I encouraged her to wear it everyday. When she died, she was buried with the watch. Thanks so much! pamelashockley(AT)aol(DOT)com

Christina - xristya@rock.com - When my mother was alive she had a woman make a piece of coral from the Black Sea (near Ukraine, from which she came to America) into a piece of jewelry for me. I didn't find out until twenty years later that she had spent her entire first paycheck on it, wanting me to have the nice things she hadn't had!

When my 16-year old was smaller, I wore a "Scooby Doo" clip on watch for many years. It was easy to read, and kids on the playground loved to come over and look at it as Scooby's paws pointed to the numbers. When I lost it I was sad at losing that connection with his childhood; fortunately he found it for me in our gravel driveway weeks later, and it still works!

These are so beautiful! Thanks for the contest!

I have a beautiful bracelet my mom gave to me recently and it brings back such fond memories of her. She just passed away and when I look at it I know she's still with me in spirit.

I have my Granny's older Timex that I got when she went into a nursing home 10 years ago. It still works and I wear it whenever I go out someplace nice. She passed away last year, and now it holds even more memories for me.

A timepiece that I own that connects me to my past is a watch I have made my disney with 101 dalmatians on the face of it. I got it when I was 8 when we went on a family vacation to Disney.

I forgot to include my happy memory with my previos entry I will include it with follower on Google friend Connect entry.

*A happy memory is that I have kept my watch for over 20 years and gave it to my daughter. Since shes a fan of the 101 Dalmatians she was so happy to have the watch.
